About Hayagriva Thangka Art
This Thangka painting features Hayagriva, one of the emanations of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. Hayagriva is regarded as Yidam or Istadevata, a powerful deity in Tibetan Buddhism. Known for his terrifying appearance, Hayagriva is often depicted with three faces, six arms, and four legs, sometimes accompanied by large wings. The main head of Hayagriva is surmounted by a small horse head, which neighs loudly, said to pierce through the false appearances of inherent existence.

Hayagriva is revered for his fierce compassion, which is directed toward ego grasping and self-cherishing attitudes. His wrathful nature is an expression of protection, cutting through obstacles and negative attachments. As described in the Sadhanamala, Hayagriva is red in color, with three eyes, bare fangs, and a brown beard. He wears a garland of skulls, symbolizing the impermanence of life, and is crowned with a figure of Amitabha.

Hayagriva’s second face is that of a blue horse, which continuously neighs, further symbolizing his powerful presence. He is depicted trampling on the world and adorned with snake ornaments and tiger skin. Hayagriva holds a Vajra and a staff in his hands, symbolizing the destruction of ignorance and the protection of the Dharma.
